Scarsdale Voters Choose Eisenman, Lee and Mark

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Kay Eisenman and Jonathan Mark won reelection to the Scarsdale Village Board of Trustees Tuesday, while newcomer David Lee won the third available seat made vacant by the departure of Trustee Richard Toder, who served two terms and was ineligible to run again.

Mark polled 390 votes, while Lee received 384 and Eisenman 351, according to the unofficial results.

The fourth candidate, Harry Reynolds, drew 140 votes. Reynolds listed himself as the candidate of the Scarsdale Outs Secrecy in Elections party.

A total of 468 people cast their ballots.

The three winners, who will serve two-year terms, were representing the Scarsdale Citizens Non-Partisan Party, nominated by the village Citizens Nominating Committee.

The only other office on the ballot was Village Justice. John H. Galloway III, who has served in the position since 1996, ran uncontested on the Scarsdale Citizens Non-Partisan Party line and received 421 votes. The Village Justice serves a four-year term.

There were six write-in votes for trustee and one for justice, village officials said. There were 18 absentee ballots cast, with one voided because it was not from a voter registered in the book, according to Village Clerk Donna Conkling. She said about 11,500 people are registered to vote.

"It was a beautiful day and I hope everyone took advantage of it to get out and vote," Mark said at about 7 p.m. Mark said the first time he ran, in 2010, the election came the day after a nor'easter knocked down trees and power lines, creating chaos and severely limiting voter turnout.

Lee is a Scarsdale High School graduate who earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College, his law degree from Columbia University and a Master of Laws in Taxation degree from New York University Law School. He has been a youth sports coach for several years, a member of the Fox Meadow Athletic Association and a trustee for Congregation Kol Ami, where he has been an officer for 12 years, including three years as co-president. He is a partner in the NYC law firm Stapper & Van Doren.

Eisenman has a Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University, a Master of Arts degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Master of Public Administration degree from NYU's Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service. She is an environmental planner for Westchester County and has served on several Scarsdale boards and committees, including 25 years with the Scarsdale Adult School.

Mark graduated from Scarsdale High School and has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College and a law degree from Columbia University. He is a partner at Cahill Gordon & Reindel.

Reynolds, a lawyer who served one term on the Scarsdale Village Board of Appeals, based his candidacy on opposing the secrecy surrounding Scarsdale's Non-Partisan electoral process. In a press release sent early in the campaign, we wrote, "Do you accept the system's belief that you should not be told what a prospective trustee or mayor knows, thinks, believes, plans, or desires concerning issues directly affecting our lives? Is that secrecy proof of 'representative government in its purest and most democratic form,' or is it the very opposite of a democracy?"
