Judge McCarthy Speaks About His Legal Experience

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – Incumbent Cortlandt Town Justice, Daniel McCarthy, is running for his second term as town justice. The lifelong Cortlandt resident, and Hendrick Hudson High School graduate, says his experience in civil and criminal law make him the best candidate for the job.

McCarthy is the second attorney in his family to sit as a Town of Cortlandt Justice, his father, sat at the bench for over 30 years. McCarthy said that besides having experience in both civil and criminal law, both of which the town justice presides over, "I also have four children, which has given me a broad experience in dealing with young people. That is actually one of my most rewarding and challenging aspects of the job," he said.

McCarthy was acting village justice in the village of Buchanan for four years, from 1991 to 1994, and soon after became town attorney. McCarthy attended Fairfield University for undergraduate studies, and Touro College of Law, the Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, for his juris doctor.

Of his experience in the town court, McCarthy said, "I was approached by a lawyer during the course of this campaign, recently, who had been before my father many years ago," said McCarthy. He said the lawyer had a son who "needed special attention and needed someone to really look out for him. And really address the issues that had brought him into court. And I had found that I'm dealing with those very same type of situations, on almost any given Friday."

"If we were able to address a matter for some person that they were unable to deal with on their own and it ends up placing them in a position that they have benefited from the experience before the court, that is the most rewarding part of the job," said McCarthy.

McCarthy continues to live in Cortlandt with his wife, is an assistant coach of several Cortlandt-based youth leagues, and operates a law office on Croton-on-Hudson.Acting village justice in the village of Buchanan earns $12,450 per yea, Buchanan village attorney earns $46,575 per year and Town of Cortlandt justices earn $39,012 per year, all without benefits. McCarthy is running as a Republican, conservative and independent.
