Lopsided Loss Continues Westhill's Winless Streak

STAMFORD, Conn. – There was no happy Halloween for the Westhill High School football team, which endured a crushing 41-7 loss to Greenwich Monday afternoon. The winless Vikings were done in by three fumbles and two crucial penalties on long drives.

The game started with promise as a 53-yard march put the Vikings in Greenwich territory. Westhill then fumbled on the Cardinal 26-yard line, and it was all Greenwich from there.

Two momentun-killing penalties did not sit well with Westhill head coach Dick Cerone. Ryan Burke appeared to have intercepted a Greenwich pass, but Westhill was called for defensive holding. And late in the second quarter, Westhill backed Greenwich up to the two-yard line on third down, but was hit with a roughing-the-passer penalty that moved the Cardinals out of danger.

Greenwich’s Shane Nastahowski rolled over the Vikings for 106 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Joel Arroyo caught a pair of touchdowns for 26 and 31 yards.

Westhill’s lone score came late in the fourth quarter. Peter Cernansky took over at quarterback for the final frame and found James Irvine from 11 yards out to put the Vikings on the board.

Westhill faces another tough test when it travels to Wilton on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.

Note: The Wilton game was changed from Friday to Saturday due to the storm.
