NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. – "Does anyone know what this is?'' Northbridge Highway Superintendent Robert Van Meter asked. "It's a wood chipper,'' one little boy said assuredly.

He was among a group of preschool students from the Whitin Community Center to receive a first-hand look at the workings of the Department of Public Works Monday morning.

DPW equipment, including a snow plow, wood chipper and backhoe, were lined up and waiting for the children, teachers and parent chaperones who walked from the center on Hill Street to the Northbridge DPW on Fletcher Street.
