NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. – The smokestack jutting more than 230 feet into the air is an iconic image in the village of Whitinsville as one travels down Main or Douglas streets.

It tells a story, one that started in the 1800s when John Whitin put Northbridge on a path that turned it into a bustling community with thousands of residents employed in its mills.
