NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. – Gerri Ciccarelli and her daughter Kate Viera of Lucille’s Floral Design of Uxbridge know well the magic of flowers, and they brought that magic to the Northbridge Senior Center on Tuesday during Teleflora’s Make Someone Smile Week.
“I deliver a lot of the time; some people even cry, they are so excited," Viera said. "The delivery of flowers makes someone’s day,’’
This is the second year Lucille’s has participated in Make Someone Smile Week. Last year, the plants, donated by the shop's wholesalers, were brought to the Uxbridge Senior Center. This year, Ciccarelli and her sister, Lucille Aldrich, decided to bring smiles to the Northbridge Senior Center and St. Camillus Hospital.
It was only by chance that the delivery came Tuesday during the center’s monthly birthday luncheon. Usually, one birthday celebrant receives a floral bouquet through luck of the draw. This month, they all received a plant.
“Everybody smiles when they receive a happy-face mug,’’ Ciccarelli said. Today, she will deliver 66 smiles to St. Camillus Hospital on Hill Street. “I do like to deal with elderly people a lot,’’ she continued. In some cases, it is the only gift someone without family will receive all year, she said.
Lucille’s is a family-owned and operated business that opened in Uxbridge 26 years ago. It is the New England unit of Teleflora Nationwide.
“It’s a small organization; others are just being chewed up by big companies,’’ Ciccarelli said. The benefit of being small is “we know our customers,’’ she said. “We’ve seen them get married; have children and watched those children grow.’’
