NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. - The schedule of programs at the Northbridge Senior Center on Highland Street the week of Aug. 13 to 17 was recently released. The center is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
A congregate lunch is served every day at the center at 11:30. Reservations should be made a day in advance by calling 508-234-2002. Meals on Wheels are also delivered every day. Call 508-234-2002 to arrange delivery.
The menu for the week of Aug. 20 through 24 follows:
Monday - Turkey and gravy, sweet potatoes, broccoli/cheese sauce, apple crisp.
Tuesday - Spaghetti and meatballs, garden salad, Italian dressing, green beans, fresh fruit.
Wedhesday - Sweet and sour pork, steamed rice, winter mix vegetables, cookie.
Thursday -Beef and bean chili, brown rice, roman style vegetabl.es, fruited ambrosa.
Friday - Apricot chicken, mashed potatoes, brussel sprouts, pears..
SCENTS OF SUMMER
Learn all about herbs and their many uses on Monday, Aug. 20 at 12:45 p.m. Sample herbal dips and teas and bring home a small sample of salve for healing and try a hand cream from yesteryear. The program will be presented by Herbalist Linda Cassavant.
HOLIDAY CLOSING
The Northbridge Senior Center and Tri- Valley Nutrition Site will be closed on Monday September 3, 2012 in observance of Labor Day.
HANNAFORD MARKET
There will be a presentation from Hannaford‘s Market in Uxbridge on Wednesday Sept. 5 at 12:45 p.m. Various exotic fruits will be used explaining their nutritional benefits. Also available will be items to sample, coupons for purchasing and Hannaford's will explain their “reach for the stars” program.
CODE RED EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION
The Northbridge Police Department encourages residents to enroll in the town's new emergency notification system, Code RED. This system will notify you directly of any emergency information. A computer is necessary to register. The website is www.northbridgepolice.com. Cick on the Code Red and enter required information. Those without a computer, contact the Senior Center for more information at 508-234-2002.
MEDICAL DRIVERS NEEDED
There is a dire need for volunteers to drive local seniors to out-of-town appointments, especially during summer months. Drivers are reimbursed 50 cents per mile. Any time, one day per week, morning or afternoon, location, would be appreciated. Call the senior center for more detailed information.
MEALS ON WHEELS
Due to the recent high volume of Meals on Wheels requests, reservations are needed 48 hours in advance for congregate meals at the nutrition site.
SENIOR POOL LEAGUE
There is a need for pool players for the Wednesday morning League. Drop by to the center, or call and the office and ask to speak to league coordinator Ken Guhman.
CAREGIVERS GROUP
The Northbridge Senior Center’s Caregivers group meets on the fourth Friday of the month. The next meeting will be on Friday, August 27 at 11 a.m. If you are currently caring for a family member or close friend, come and join others who share your compassion.
SHINE
A Shine Counselor is available by appointment only, to discuss Medicare and health
insurance issues. Call the Senior Center for more information or to schedule an
appointment.
ASK THE NURSE
On Tuesday, August 14 and Tuesday, Aug. 28 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Pat Wallen, registered nurse, will be available to check vital signs and answer health questions.
DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT
The Northbridge Senior Center has a variety of durable medical equipment available for
local senior residents, there is no fee for this service. Come into the center and someone
will be available to show you what is available for your needs.
MONTHLY BIRTHDAY DINNER
The Northbridge Senior Center will hold the monthly birthday dinner at 11:45 a.m. on
Tuesday, Aug 28. All birthday participants are eligible for the plant raffle. Guests are welcome. Reservations with the nutrition manager must be made no later than 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 24.
