NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. – Visitors to the Whitinsville Social Library the past few days may have heard the sound of workers on the roof as repairs authorized at town meeting last fall got under way.

Voters approved $101,150 for the project at the Fall Annual Town Meeting in October.

Water leaks prompted an analysis of the 100-year-old building, conducted by Kaestle Boos Associates, Inc., last year.

The analysis determined that 235 cracked, broken and missing slate roof shingles needed to be replaced, that gutters and downspouts needed to be replaced and heating elements at the gutters were needed to prevent ice dams.

Roof repair costs total $68,500.

In addition, the study found stress cracks on exterior walls and dry and cracked caulking around windows, both of which are allowing water to penetrate inside.

Repairs are expected to be completed by the end of this month.
