UXBRIDGE, Mass. - Eugene J. Plante, Sr., 89, died Tuesday, Sept. 11 in the Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy (Philbrook) Plante; two sons, Eugene J. Plante, Jr., and his wife, Denise, of Whitinsville, and Norman P. Plante, and his wife, Frances, of Lecanto, FL; seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by five brothers, and three sisters.
Mr. Plante was born in Manville, RI, a son of Joseph and Olivine (Lincourt) Plante. He grew up in Blackstone, and lived in Whitinsville for 24 years, and in Woonsocket for 16 years, before moving to Uxbridge in 2004.
As a youth, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, in Bellows Falls, Vermont. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Plante served in the Marine Corps from 1942-1946, then served in the U.S. Army until 1963.
He was the head chef at the Allendale Insurance Company in Johnston, RI, for 20 years, retiring in 1985. Previously he ran the kitchen at the Saint Camillus Nursing Home, in Whitinsville.
He was a member of the Millerville Men's Club in Blackstone, the Northbridge Senior Center, and he enjoyed playing Bingo.
Mr. Plante's Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, in Saint Patrick's Church, Cross Street, Whitinsville. Burial will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, Rhode Island. Calling Hours will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13 in the Carr Funeral Home, 24 Hill Street, Whitinsville.
