NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. – Joanne (LaFleur) Miedema, 94, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2012 in the Beaumont Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of Northbridge, surrounded by her family. She was the wife, for 56 years, of the late Sidney Miedema who died in 1996.
She is survived by her children, Sharon, wife of Edward Bakker of Whitinsville, David and his wife Joanne Miedema of Whitinsville, and Kenneth and his wife Leslie Miedema of Jacksonville, FL; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law David Miedema of Whitinsville and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by five brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Miedema was employed as an executive secretary for 19 years at the former Whitin Machine Works, retiring in1969.
She was born in 1918 in Chipman, Alberta, Canada, where her parents were homesteaders for 10 years, returning to Whitinsville when Joanne was 3 years old. Her parents, the late Nicholas and Ella A. (Van Loon) LaFleur, came to America from Holland. She was a graduate of Northbridge High School, class of 1935.
Mrs. Miedema was active at Fairlawn Christian Reformed Church where she had served as a former choir member, church secretary, Sunday school teacher and Bible leader for the Ladies Guild. Her hobbies included entertaining, traveling, bowling, and playing Scrabble.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 at 10 AM in the Fairlawn Christian Reformed Church, 305 Goldthwaite Rd., Whitinsville 01588. Interment will follow in Riverdale Cemetery, Providence Rd., Northbridge 01534. Visiting hours will be Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. in the Buma Funeral Home, 480 Church St., Whitinsville.
