DOUGLAS, Mass. - Leonard M. Vassar, 65, of 62 Riedell Road, died Friday, Sept. 28 at St. Vincent Hospital after an illness.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Katherine (Zifcak) Vassar; a daughter Dawn Murray and her husband Andrew of Arizona; a son David Vassar and his wife April of Douglas; five grandchildren, Erin Saari and her husband Jayme, A.J. Murray and Ethan, Aiden, and Logan Vassar; a great granddaughter Chloe Saari;two brothers Kenneth Vassar and his wife Dorothy of Charlton, Richard Vassar and his wife Cynthia of Millbury; two sisters Linda Angers and her husband Richard of Millbury, and Patricia Vassar of Uxbridge, nephews, nieces, and many friends.
Born in Worcester on May 21, 1947 he was the son of Anelle “Nellie” (Varaska) Vassar and lived in Millbury before moving to Douglas 40 years ago. Lenny graduated from Millbury High School and was a graduate of the Worcester Police Academy in 1989. He worked as a manager for Decision One in Northborough before his retirement and was a part-time Douglas Police Officer for almost 20 years. He was on the board of directors at the Slovak Catholic Sokol Club and enjoyed black-powder shooting, air and car shows, and parades.
His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. with calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. in Jackman Funeral Home, 7 Mechanic St., Douglas. Burial will be in St. Denis Cemetery on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 10 a.m.
