NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. - The driver of a stolen SUV who died in a car crash after a police chase through Northbridge and Uxbridge has been identified as a 17-year-old from Rhode Island.
Rome Alexander Ives, of 47 Brattle St., Providence, died after a head-on collision on Route 122, the Worcester County District Attorney's Office said.
The driver of the other vehicle, Anthony Southwick, 30, of Uxbridge, was transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester with serious injuries. His condition is unknown.
On Friday, Northbridge police attempted to stop the Ford Explorer driven by Ives after it was seen in the Rockdale section of Northbridge. It continued south on Route 122, with Uxbridge police picking up pursuit after it crossed the town line, the DA's office said.
Uxbridge police allowed the vehicle to pull away shortly before it crossed into the northbound lane and collided with Southwick's Toyota pickup truck, the DA's office said.
The DA's Office, Uxbridge police and Northbridge police were investigating the crash with the assistance of the regional accident reconstruction team.

I agree with richard wiles 100%
His parents must be proud. My opinion is police chases are a catch 22 and ultimately necessary to reduce the possibility of more reckless driving... If criminals knew cops wouldn't chase they would just run every time possibly causing more problems/injury's down the road. If you have ever been pulled over for anything the first thing you do is look in the rear-view mirror and make a decision whether to stop or run. 99.9 will stop... that .1 will run... take away any chance of a high speed chase and that 99.9% will fall eventually endangering other pedestrians.
Hopefully the innocent victim pulls though with no lifelong injuries... And for the car thug?.... My tax dollars won't be paying for his 3 hots and a cot and I'm satisfied with that outcome.
at least he won't steal any more cars.
my personal opinion is that it was not worth the chase the police could have called down the road and got the man while he went in somewhere or even had the road blocked somewhere that was safe to do so it should not have even got to the point of a chase.i talked to people on that road and they all said the police were chasing at a high rate of speed all i know is it could have been worse if people were out and about like a normal day .I'm not saying what the man did should have gone unnoticed but it was not worth killing anyone over and it could have been my family or yours in the car that was hit by this man all for a stolen car
I'm thinking this wasn't his only issue in the past - innocent people don't run.
