NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. – “This is perfect homecoming weather,’’ said one visitor as he made his way through the tables and displays set up at Lasell Field Saturday morning.
Northbridge High School math teacher Neil Polucha probably felt differently as he sat on the hot seat above cold water in a dunk tank. After seven or eight dunks into the tank, he was wet and cold, and more than 20 students waited in line for their chance to plunge him into the chilly depths.
Current and fromer Northbridge High School students and teachers turned out for the annual Homecoming Day festivities Saturday, including field hockey and soccer games early morning and late afternoon, and Rams football at 1 p.m. on Lasell Field.
Some visitors searched for hot chocolate to ward off the cold, others walked between the displays and the mid-morning field hockey game while eating ice cream cones.
From burgers to cotton candy, there was food aplenty, all the sales raising money for classes, clubs and organizations.
Amnesty International sold raffle tickets to three special events – a Lady Gaga concert at TD Garden, "Jersey Boys" at Boston's Colonial Theater and "My Morning Jacket" on Christmas Eve at Boston University.
All proceeds will go to the Northbridge Food Pantry, which is Amnesty International’s project this year. "They've been running out of food regularly,'' said club treasurer Alicia Leclair.
Leclair said the goal is to find a sustainable way for the pantry to fight hunger. The hope is to help the pantry short- and long-term, she said.
Leclair is also a student in the school’s systems dynamics class, which teaches how to think outside the box to solve problems in a more sustainable way.
Members of the DECA club, a managing and marketing club, created personalized T-shirts for their customers, part of a marketing project competition that will be entered into a state competition.
Also available for sale by a variety of clubs and organizations were friendship bracelets, cheer bows, Northbridge High School athletic gear and wreaths and charms by Operation Graduation.
