MILLBURY, Mass. —The Northbridge High School Boys Basketball team withstood a late game rally by the Millbury Woolies to take a hard fought 58-54 win Monday night at Millbury High.
Northbridge’s Matt Phelan drilled a three-point shot with less than a minute to go and just seven seconds left on the shot clock to seal the win. Phelan and teammate Antonio Becerril led all scorers with 17 points each.
The Rams (13-4) went on a 16-2 run and jumped out to a 20-9 first quarter lead, but the Woolies fought back. Gordon Siebenhaar and Tristan Cano sparked the Woolies (2-16) in the second quarter when they held the Rams to just five points in the second quarter.
Trailing by four at 25-21, the Woolies were very much in the game. But in the third quarter the Rams put some distance between themselves and the Woolies behind Becerril, who netted six points and Jordan Johnson, who hit two big three-point shots and led 43-34.
The Woolies were led by Nicholas Guaragno, who scored 14 points. Dakota Miller added 12 and Siebenhaar chipped in with nine more. Jason Ganley added 14 points for the Rams including 6 of 6 from the free throw line.
The Woolies play on Thursday night in Uxbridge. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. The Rams play at home on Wednesday. night against Nipmuc. That game time is also 7 p.m.
