NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. – About 20 budding basketball stars took to the courts of Whitin Community Center on Feb. 23 in the annual Free Throw Competition sponsored by the Mumford Council Knights of Columbus #365.
The competition is broken down into age categories, explained this year's director Joseph Ramsey, and those with the best score go on to compete in district, regional, state, national and international finals.
While one age group competed, doing their best to get 15 of 15 throws into the hoop, other groups played pick-up games.
District finals will be held March 9 in St. James Church in Grafton, and Northbridge children making it to district levels after the weekend competition are Christopher Brouwer, Brennan Mahoney, Noah Houle, Gabe Brookhouse, William Bon, Jacqueline Puda, Samira Raud and Katherine Puda.
The state finals will be held April 6 at Holy Cross College in Worcester.
The Knights of Columbus has been sponsoring the international Free Throw Competition for boys and girls from the ages of 10 to 14 since 1972.
