NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. - Northbridge American Legion Baseball Club – Post 343 defeated the Auburn American Legion Post 279 by a score of 8-2 in the first playoff game in the B Bracket of the Zone 4 Playoffs.
It was the third loss handed to Auburn this season by the Northbridge Post. The win raised the Northbridge record to 20-7 while Auburn fell to 13-14.
Northbridge started Jake Byrne of Grafton on the mound and Tom Paine of Upton worked behind the plate. Auburn countered with Ben Libuda and Zack Clifford. Libuda was relieved in the sixth inning by Jason Vausho.
Byrne held Auburn to only four hits during the game giving up two runs and striking out two. Matt Phelan of Northbridge came up big during the night, hammering out a triple that scored two runs in the first inning and walked in another RBI in the fifth.
Tom Paine was 2-4 with two singles and two runs scored while teammate Greg O’Donnell of Northbridge was 2-2 with a single and a double and two runs scored.
Auburn’s John Kewley was 2-3 with one run scored.
“Phelan’s triple was the key hit for us tonight, and his three RBI’s won the game for us,” said Northbridge Coach John Demagian.
“Timely hitting and timely pitching like Jake Byrne gave us tonight wins ballgames,” he continued.
Northbridge plays the East Side Post tonight at Lasell Field in Whitinsville at 5:30 p.m. as East Side won their Bracket game by a score of 5-1 over the Main South Post.
Both the Auburn Post and the Main South Post will also face off tonight with Main South hosting that game. The loser of that game will be eliminated from the double-elimination format playoffs and the remainder of the teams will play at Tivnan Field at Lake Park in Worcester Wednesday and Thursday afternoon and evenings.
