Northbridge Legion Wins Over Grafton Hill Post

NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. -  Northbridge American Legion Baseball Club Post 343 came out on top in a Zone 4 match against the Grafton Hill Legion Post Tuesday at Lasell Field.

Grafton Hill, who earlier in the season beat Northbridge 1-0 at Tivnan Field in Worcester, started Joe Caico on the mound and Andrew Montiverdi behind the plate.

The Northbridge Post countered with Jacob Byrne of Grafton and Tom Paine of Upton. Byrne quickly gave up a run to the Grafton Hill team but settled down until the sixth inning when the Grafton batters scored three runs to tie the game at 4-4.

Northbridge jumped all over Montiverdi in the first inning scoring their four runs. Grafton manager Jack Kelleher brought in Shamus Malley to relieve their starter and
held Northbridge scoreless for the next five innings.

In the top of the sixth inning, Northbridge’s Byrne tired in the heat and gave up the three runs Grafton Hill needed to tie the game. Nate Pajka of Douglas came in to relieve Byrne in the top of the seventh inning and held the Hill scoreless.

In the bottom half of the inning, Northbridge’s Matt Phelan led off with a single
and managed to get over to third base with two outs. Greg O’Donnell then singled pass the Grafton Hill third baseman and Phelan trotted home with the winning run to give host Northbridge the victory 5-4 over Grafton Hill.

Tim Beaudette of Uxbridge had two singles and starting pitcher Jacob Byrne had two hits including a double.

With the loss, Grafton Hill fell to 11-13 while Northbridge went to 18-6. The Northbridge team remains in second place in the Zone 4 standings two games behind Milford Post 59 whose record is 17-4 with five games to play in the next five days.

The Northbridge Post meets Shrewsbury on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the new Shrewsbury High School field and ends the regular season on Friday when they host
North County (Gardner) at 5:30 PM.
