NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. — The 10U Northbridge Youth Baseball team won the Western MA Cal Ripken State Tournament for the second year in a row this past weekend and will go on to the New England Regional Tournament next weekend in Danbury, Conn.
Northbridge won the district tournament in Upton, defeating Upton 10-4, Douglas 8-1, Sutton 12-3 and Milford in the finals, 14-13. “We were down to Milford 11-0 [at one point] and came back ... to score 7 runs in the bottom of the 6th to win the game. Truly the largest comeback by any team I’ve coached in my seven years in Northbridge Youth Baseball," said coach Scott Visbeek.
“In the Western MA State Tournament, we lost our first game to Littleton 6-1, but rebounded with wins versus Turners Falls 13-4, Sutton 15-2, Townsend/Ashby 12-2, Hudson 7-6 and finally winning the championship game versus Littleton 13-3,” Visbeek noted.
“I know it’s only 10-year old-baseball, but the games are real and the boys compete at the highest level for their age group. They all contributed towards our goal, and continue to do so in hopes of a successful showing in the New England Regional Tournament,” he said.
If the team wins the regional tournament, it will represent New England at the Cal Ripken World Series in Bentonville, Ark., in August.
