Already Salem has canceled a host of Halloween-related activities including the Kids’ Costume Parade, outdoor food vending, the Salem Food Truck Festival, and the Mayor’s Night Out. The community, which was the site of the Salem Witch Trials, attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each October. Other big…

Friend, "Mom," Cultural Ambassador: North Salem's Maryanne D'Amato Helps Local Au Pairs
It all started because Maryanne D’Amato was a friendly neighbor. After working in television, she and her husband left New York City for suburban life in North Salem. And it is there where D’Amato met and befriended her neighbor’s au pairs while out and about with her own children. “I just adored these girls,” said D’Amato. “I enjoyed seeing them; they’d walk with me and tell me about their countries.” Au pairs, not to be confused with nannies, are part cultural exchange, part child care—with heavy emphasis officially put on the cultural exchange. They are typically young women and men fro…

Germaine and Renatta Owens had one thing in mind when they moved out of New York City into the suburbs: Halloween. : Boy Transforms Westwood Yard Into Haunted Halloween Heaven
Drive down Clinton Avenue in Westwood and you'll know exactly which house is Brody's. The lawn is a maze of headstones, spooky animatronics and shrieking children. That's just how the 9-year-old wants it. Brody, a fourth-grader at Brookside Elementary School, designs the display himself for the past five years, adding to it along the way, according to his mom, Kim Fowkes. "We started decorating when he was 4, and ever since then..." she looks at her son. "It's been mayhem," Brody said, finishing his mom's sentence. It gets spooky.Cecilia Levine Pirate skeletonCecilia Levine Hallo…
