New Hempstead Woman, 81, Crosses College Diploma Off Bucket List
NEW HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- An 81-year-old New Hempstead woman will be joining her decades-younger classmates when they get their diplomas in a few weeks, according to a report by lohud.com.
Gertrude “Trudy” Murdock, who had attended Rockland Community College in the early 1970s, had to put her formal studies aside while she raised three children and pursued a career in banking, the lohud.com report said.
But now, 44 years later, she can cross another item off her bucket list – she will graduate on May 22 with an associate’s degree in liberal arts, lohud.com reported.

Hartford Man Wanted In Wilton Shoplifting Surrenders To Police
WILTON, CONN. – A Hartford man has been arrested in the theft of handbags from a Wilton store in 2013, according to a report in The Wilton Bulletin.
Quintrell Dailey, 25, was charged with larceny and conspiracy after he turned himself in to police in Hartford earlier this month, according to Wilton police.
The purses stolen from T.J. Maxx were worth about $1,200, The Wilton Bulletin article said.
Wilton police, who took custody of Dailey, said he posted a $2,500 bond and was released.

Wappingers Falls House Fire Injures One Person
WAPPINGERS FALL, N.Y. – One person was injured while escaping a house fire in Wappingers Falls Monday night, according to a report in The Poughkeepsie Journal.
Two people were at home when the blaze broke out at 6 Woodland Court around 8 p.m., and one of them suffered serious burns, The Poughkeepsie Journal reported.
Multiple fire departments, including Hughsonville and East Fishkill, responded to the fire, which was put out by 9 p.m., The Poughkeepsie Journal said.
The cause is under investigation, The Poughkeepsie Journal reported.

Suffern Man Charged With Stealing Item From Church
SUFFERN, N.Y. – The suspect in the theft of a religious object from a Suffern church has been arrested, police said.
Walter Hand, 53, of Suffern, walked out of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church on Lafayette Avenue on Friday, May 6, with a gold lunette, a device used to hold the host upright in a cross-shaped vessel during Mass, police said.
Police said that the theft was recorded on the church’s security camera, and Hand was subsequently identified and arrested.
The lunette was recovered, police said.

Yonkers Officials, Residents Push State For School Rebuilding Legislation
YONKERS, N.Y. -- Yonkers officials, students, parents and teachers rallied last week for a $2 billion borrowing plan that would fix up the city’s aging schools and build three new ones.
Mayor Mike Spano, who has been pushing the bond issue, led the demonstration under cloudy skies Wednesday in front of the Martin Luther King Jr. Academy, according to his spokeswoman, Christina Gilmartin.
The original plan was to get the borrowing plan into the state’s current $145 billion budget failed, so Spano is pursuing “a parallel track,” Gilmartin said.
