Tests Find Elevated Lead Levels In Water At Nanuet Schools
NANUET, N.Y. -- High lead levels were found in nine sinks at Nanuet schools, but tests showed no such contamination in any drinking fountains, according to a report by Schools Superintendent Mark S. McNeill. The schools’ chief posted an update on the district’s website Thursday informing parents and staff that testing at four buildings had been completed with the assistance of Rockland BOCES Health and Safety. Yonkers Litterbugs Could Get Whacked With $5,000 Fine
YONKERS, N.Y. -- Litterbugs in Yonkers can expect to get hit with thousands of dollars in fines if they get caught, according to a report by lohud.com. The city will launch an ad campaign this summer informing the public of the new $5,000 fine and stronger anti-litter law, which was passed Tuesday, lohud.com reported. Those ads will appear in bus shelters and on city trash cans on well-traveled streets such as Ashburton Avenue, the lohud.com story said. Trumbull Man Gets 6 Years Behind Bars In Crash That Killed Stratford Woman
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- A Trumbull man who tried to blame a fatal Bridgeport crash on two other people has been sentenced to six years behind bars, according to The Connecticut Post. Peter Burdick, 24, who was drunk when he crashed his car into one driven by Stratford resident Nancy E. Distefano Keller last year, was found guilty of manslaughter, The Connecticut Post reported. YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- The graduation caps flew at recent commencement exercises at Lakeland High School in Yorktown. The 271 members of the Class of 2016 gleefully tossed their headgear high into the air upon being pronounced “alumni” last Saturday. Stewie The Duck To Teach Norwalk Kids About Water Safety
NORWALK, CONN. – The summer swim season is upon us and Norwalk police and recreation officials want kids to follow Stewie the Duck’s example and have a safe and happy one. Stewie will paddle over to the city's Calf Pasture Beach on Saturday, July 2, to help them celebrate Water Safety Day. Putnam Humane Society Hopes To Scare Up Family For Boo
CARMEL, N.Y. – The Putnam Humane Society in Carmel says it has an “adora-boo” kitty up for adoption. Boo has had a tough time since his owner passed away, the animal shelter said. The “velvety soft” male cat came to the shelter “scared, shut down and confused,” it said. But extra love and attention brought him out of his shell and he’s now very outgoing, it said. BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. -- Hydrant flushing in certain parts of Briarcliff will continue until Friday afternoon, according to Village Manager Philip Zegarelli’s latest report.
